Italy with Virgie Tovar Food

Rome - Florence

2022: Mar 19 - Mar 25

Andiamo! Let's walk and eat through gorgeous central Italy! Italy is the home of legendary cuisine, breathtaking architecture, timeless art pieces, wine tastings in vineyards, afternoon espressos and sidewalk cafes. What the Italians call 'La Dolce Vita,' or the 'Sweet Life,' is yours for the taking. Benvenuto in Italia!

Accessibility Notes:

> Much of Italy's infrastructure is several hundred years old, and Italy has not had a disability rights or fat justice movement that is comparable in size or impact to the ones in the United States: streets are cobbled, many are not car/bus friendly, most hotels do not have elevators, bars and restaurants are narrow, weight capacity and dimensions of seating are not readily available on websites; most eateries don't have a website. Though the trip team has worked to tailor this itinerary with mobility and body size in mind, we have done so within the aforementioned limitations. However, places don't change if we're not in them! We'll be brainstorming hacks and support during the virtual happy hours before the trip.

> This trip includes 2 optional walking tours, each of them at least 1-hour in duration.

> This trip includes 1 train ride from Rome to Florence. The train ride itself isn't mandatory if travelers want to arrange their own transpo, but getting to Florence is mandatory. Travelers will be asked to walk from the hotel to the station in Rome and transport their own luggage. Upon arrival in Florence, there will be a bus that transports us and our luggage from the station to our hotel. Here is accessibility information for train travel in Italy: https://www.italiarail.com/travellers-disabilities

> The average weight capacity for hotel beds is 500 pounds.

> Seating on Italian trains is a modified bench style with movable arm rests. See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4DZ-Z_6wjA We are working to try and get extra seats on the train for everyone's comfort.

After working up an appetite you’ll dine at local Osteria, a wine bar serving simple food.

After having some time to relax, you will join a local chef for a pasta-making course. Other than pizza, is there any other type of food that is as synonymous with culture as the Italian’s and their pasta? In Italy, there are over 50 varieties of pasta and tonight your chef will lead a workshop on how to prepare a few types by hand.

Day 3

No trip to Rome is complete without visiting the smallest country in the world, the Vatican. At only 19 square miles and a population of just over 800, the tiny city-state easily wins this claim.

Your guide will lead you through a comprehensive tour of the Vatican, beginning with the Vatican Museum. This experience will give you a real insight into Vatican City, from the ancient sculptures to the Raphael Rooms, and of course to the piece de la resistance, the Sistine Chapel.

The afternoon is free for you to sip espressos or wander through the streets. If you’re feeling thirsty, there will be an optional Wine Tasting offered.

The optional wine tasting will be lead by a professional Italian sommelier. They will not only give you a master class on wines but also a bit of geography as you will be tasting wines from the north, central, and south regions of Italy. All paired with snacks of course.

After, you will have the evening at leisure to meander and discover on your own.

Today you will have the opportunity to sample the legendary cuisine of Tuscany directly from the source on a Tuscan Farm Experience.

After lunch, you will head back to Florence where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore this romantic city.
